Volunteers in Swaziland staying at Sondzelas Backpackers Lodge in Mlilwane National Park

The rugby coaching volunteers will be staying at Sondzelas Backpackers Lodge situated within the lovely Mlilwane National Park.  It is very close to Skrum’s office where they report to daily and which they can walk or cycle to.

The main accommodation is in the house, with shared bath and shower rooms but there are also many typical rondavels in the garden that use communal shower and toilet blocks.

Facilities include a swimming pool, an outside Boma where the evening meal is cooked and eaten, a lounge with t.v., an outside building housing a bar, table tennis and table football and a good sized kitchen where the volunteers can cook their own food if they have any special dietary requirements. Breakfast and dinner will be taken at the Lodge.  Lunch will be arranged by Skrum and either consist of a packed lunch or something at the office.    Don’t be surprised if a family of warthogs are passing through the garden at the lodge or a few zebra grazing on the lawn!

Not far away is another camp, the Rest Camp, with its own rondavels, housing, swimming pool, restaurant, boma and there a hippo and her baby are often wondering around at night so a torch and a bit of caution are a must!  Sondzelas will drive you down at night when there is an event on.

At the Rest Camp you can hire mountain bikes, or book a horse trail, and see the animals in the park up close in an environmentally friendly way.  I did the horse trail and we got very close to zebras, wildebeast, warthogs, blesbucks, etc.  Do not swim in any of the lakes though unless you want to be crocodile fodder!

Living in a park full of wild animals will certainly add to the experience that the volunteers will have whilst in Swaziland!
