Empowering the ladies around Udaipur – teaching them valuable sewing skills – Jo McBride from Western Australia

If you like to design and sew, then the Women’s Empowerment Program at this lovely Indian charity is ideal for you.

The lovely Ritu, who is the co-ordinator, accompanies you everyday to help translate and plan your day.

When I was there, we had about 12-15 ladies’ each day, a total of 21 altogether.  It
was really lovely that they found time in their busy day to come.  We tried
to cover as many skills as possible and set up a file of projects ready to
go for future volunteers.  Since the women all wear saris, we tended to make
bags, purses, pyjamas and children’s clothes – all small things as fabrics are
sourced from discarded clothes and sheets.  I was, however, lucky enough to
sweet talk one of the tailors in town to donate all his scraps and remnants
so that was a help.

It didn’t take long to think like an Indian and add as much bling and decoration as possible to all the projects!

We sat on the ground in the village outside one of the women’s homes on old rice sacks that had been stitched together to make a matting with the chooks, goats,
and even camels!  All adding to the interest of the day.  The afternoons were
free to explore all Udaipur has to offer and of course SHOP!

I thoroughly recommend this program for all ages and there is ample opportunity to follow up with ideas and projects when you get home.
